Ras Za’atar – The Head of Thyme

Located directly across from Ras Ghozlani, at the southern entrance of Marsa Bareika Bay, lies the striking dive site known as Ras Za’atar. Its name comes from Arabic, where “Za’atar” means thyme, and “Ras” means head—together translating to “Head of Thyme.”

This site offers both scenic beauty and rich biodiversity, making it a must-visit for underwater explorers and photography enthusiasts.

🤿 Diving Ras Za’atar – What Awaits Below

Your dive begins along a sloping wall, best explored at depths between 15 to 18 meters. The wall is dotted with cracks and small overhangs, creating ideal hiding spots for marine life and adding texture to your underwater experience.

About 30 minutes into the dive, you’ll encounter a vertical chimney—a highlight for many divers. Sunbeams filter down through the chimney, reflecting off the cliff walls and creating a moody, dramatic scene. It’s a perfect photo opportunity for those looking to capture the magical lighting and ambiance.

🌊 The Plateau – A Hotspot for Marine Activity

As you reach the corner of Ras Za’atar, the wall opens up into a plateau, where currents are often stronger. These currents carry nutrient-rich waters, which in turn support a vibrant and lively reef.

This area is where you're most likely to encounter larger marine species, drawn in by the abundance of food and activity. Keep your eyes open—you never know what might cruise by!

🐠 Ideal for Experienced Divers & Photographers

Ras Za’atar is a fantastic site for intermediate to advanced divers and underwater photographers alike. With its combination of wall dives, light-filled chimneys, and reef plateaus, this site offers a wide range of underwater experiences.
