When you are planning a scuba diving trip to Egypt, you will often face the classic Red Sea dilemma: Is there better diving in Hurghada or Sharm el Sheikh?

Both offer warm, clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and world-class dive sites—but they deliver very different diving experiences.

So, which is better? The honest answer: it depends on your experience level, diving style, and budget.

Whether you are looking to get your PADI Open Water certification or are an experienced diver looking to explore world-famous wrecks and drop-offs, this guide will help you decide which Egyptian diving capital is right for you.

Dramatic Drop Offs vs Sloping Reefs

Perhaps the biggest difference in diving in Sharm el-Sheikh or diving in Hurghada is the underwater terrain.

Sharm el-Sheikh is located at the tip of the Sinai Peninsula, adjoining the Gulf of Aqaba with a nearby continental shelf that drops away sharply near Sharm. This results in spectacular wall diving with sites in the Ras Mohammed National Park and the Straits of Tiran featuring huge vertical precipices that plunge hundreds of meters into the blue.

Because of these steep drop-offs, the reefs in Sharm are often subjected to strong ocean currents. These currents sweep in nutrients, which in turn attract massive schools of fish and pelagic species.

Hurghada sits on the African mainland of Egypt, with surrounding coastal seabeds that are much shallower and slope more gradually. You will find sprawling, vibrant coral gardens, shallow pinnacles, and sandy plateaus.

Shallower, gentler slopes mean much less current and brighter conditions, with more sunlight penetrating the waters. Many of the hotels in Hurghada have their own shallow house reefs. Hurghada may lack those dramatic drop-offs and the vertical drama of Sharm, but it instead offers incredibly relaxing, colorful, and photogenic dives.

Sharm el Sheikh is widely considered one of the best diving destinations in the world, especially for experienced divers.

What Marine Life Can You Expect to See Diving in Sharm el Sheikh or Hurghada?

While both Hurghada and Sharm el Sheikh host the usual Red Sea's cast of characters: blue-spotted rays, lionfish, moray eels, clownfish, and thousands of anthias, the differing underwater topography attracts different visitors.

· In Sharm el-Sheikh: The strong currents and deep walls mean a higher chance of seeing large pelagic fish. You have a better chance of spotting reef sharks, hammerheads (in the summer), manta rays, and large schools of barracuda, wrasse, and snapper.

· In Hurghada: The shallow coral gardens are perfect for macro photographers and those who love finding hidden critters. You are very likely to see resident sea turtles feeding on the seagrass, pods of bottlenose dolphins (especially around Dolphin House/Shaab El Erg), and incredibly dense, colorful hard corals.

Hurghada or Sharm: The Vibe

Not all of your diving holiday will be spent diving in the Red Sea; at times, you may want to venture out on dry land. Or maybe your family is accompanying you on your diving vacation. Here, you will notice maybe the largest difference between the two busy Red Sea destinations.

Hurghada is a huge sprawling, busy city on the Egyptian mainland. Sure, you will find traditional markets (souqs) in the vibrant old town area of El Dahr, but it may be a fair distance to travel from your hotel.

As well as a bustling, authentic downtown area, you will also find elegant restaurants and shops in the modern new Marina and many of the hotels dotted along the coast that caters to everybody from budget backpacker to 5* resort.

By comparison, Sharm el Sheikh is a relatively new purpose-built resort town. Sharm is much more diving-focused; you can’t go in a bar, coffee shop, or restaurant without tripping over one of the many dive instructors or guides. The town lives, breathes, and sleeps diving.

Unlike Hurghada, Sharm is quite compact with well-planned different areas, Naama Bay, Sharks Bay, Nabq, Hadaba etc – nowhere is more than 30 minutes away from the jetty at most. Large 5-star resorts sit alongside mid-range/budget hotels, perfect for divers on a budget. A wide choice of restaurants, bars and nightlife gives the resort a more international feel, although the Old town does offer that little taste of authenticity.

Hurghada offers Egyptian authenticity; choose Sharm for a town built on diving tourism.

Final Verdict: Hurghada vs Sharm - Which is Better For Diving?

Does Sharm or Hurghada Have Better Visibility?

Both average 20–40 metres. Sharm’s offshore reefs (Shark, Yolanda) frequently exceed 40m. Hurghada’s coastal sites sometimes drop to 15m after wind.
