Beyond The Blue Hole: The Magic of Dahab
When most people think of scuba diving in the Red Sea, they instantly think of Sharm el Sheikh or Hurghada – diving in Dahab is often overlooked. But just 100km north of the luxury resorts of Sharm el Sheikh lies Dahab– for many divers, their favourite Red Sea for scuba diving.
While Sharm
is defined by massive day, boats and luxury hotels, Dahab is defined by its laid, back
vibe, 'hippie, chic' atmosphere, and—most importantly—the ease of shore
diving.
In Dahab, you don't need a boat to reach world
class reefs; you simply walk from a seaside cafe directly into the waters of
the Red Sea.
Welcome to Dahab a true diver’s paradise.
A Diver’s Playground on Your Doorstep
Dahab offers a completely different rhythm to scuba
diving in Sharm. Here, the day may start slowly with a coffee and croissant at
Ralph’s German bakery* before jumping into a jeep for a short ride to a dive
site where you can dive in from the shore.
*(Other German coffee shops do exist, but oh boy…Ralph’s
is good – try their chocolate fudge brownies for an indulgent energy hit!)
From
legendary sites like the Blue Hole Dahab and the Canyon to relaxed dives at
Lighthouse and Eel Garden, the variety is extraordinary. Most sites are
accessible directly from shore, meaning less time organising logistics—and more
time underwater. The coastline itself is one continuous fringing reef, offering
everything from coral gardens and pinnacles to dramatic drop, offs and swim, throughs.
Explore Dahab’s best dive sites and daily diving options with Circle Divers – we can arrange the pickups from anywhere within the main Dahab and Masbat bay.
The Blue Hole: Perhaps Egypt's Most Famous Dive Site
You can’t
talk about Dahab without mentioning the
Blue Hole. Situated 10km north of the main town, it is a vertical sinkhole
that plunges to over 100 metres.
For
recreational divers (PADI Advanced Open Water or above), the Bells and Blue
Hole can be a relatively easy yet beautiful dive when approached correctly
(usually entering via 'The
Bells' and drifting into the hole). However, 'The Arch'—a deep tunnel at a
maximum depth of 52 meters that leads to the open sea is strictly for technical
divers only.
Dahab
is not just about the Blue Hole, though!
Our Top 5 Dive Sites in Dahab
From the
dramatic swim, throughs and light, filled cracks in the reef of The Canyon, to
the relaxed fish, filled crystal, clear waters of sites like the Islands or
Bannerfish Bay, the diversity of Dahab's most beautiful dive sites means you
can dive several times a week without ever repeating the same diving
experience.
1. The Canyon
Lying a few
hundred metres south of the Blue Hole is a massive hole in the reef. The dive
starts as you enter a “fish bowl” before descending into a narrow crack that
opens up into a massive underwater dome at 30m. The light effects here are
surreal.
2. The Islands
A stunning shallow reef made up of vibrant coral pinnacles
and “islands” of hard coral, creating a maze, like underwater landscape teeming
with reef fish.
3. The Lighthouse
This
popular site for training and night dives is located right in the centre of the
Masbat. Here you will find a sloping reef with huge coral heads and plenty of
macro marine life, including seahorses and nudibranchs. Ideal for a PADI Open
Water Diver.
4. EelGarden
Named after
the hundreds of garden eels that live in the sandy slope. It's a peaceful,
shallow dive that culminates in a beautiful coral garden. Great for underwater
video opportunities.
5. RasAbu Galum
For the
ultimate adventure, you can take a camel trek or a boat further north to this
remote Bedouin settlement. Circle Divers Dahab even offers overnight safari
trips with camping to Ras
Abu Galum.
Shore Diving: No Boats Required
Nearly all
diving in Dahab is Jeep, based (or even camel, based!). You gear up at the
dive centre, load your tanks into the back of a 4x4, and drive or ride along
the coast. Entries are typically via shore walks or easy giant strides from low
ledges.
If you want
boat diving, it is possible to take a boat to Gabr
el Bint to the south, which offers some of the most pristine and untouched
coral reefs in the northern Red Sea.
A Global Hub for Technical Diving
Dahab isn’t
just for recreational divers—it’s one of the most important technical diving
hubs in the Red Sea of the sinai.
The deep
walls, easy shore access, and predictable conditions make it ideal for advanced
training. Technical divers in Dahab come here to explore deeper profiles,
decompression diving, and trimix courses—often using sites like the Blue Hole
and Canyon as training grounds.
At our
Dahab dive centre, we offer full training in both PADI TEC/REC and TDI/SDI
Technical diving courses. Call today to find out more about TEC diving in
Dahab.
The Dahab Lifestyle: Slow, Simple, Addictive
What truly
sets Dahab apart isn’t just the diving it’s the way of life.
This is not
a place of five, star mega resorts or international chains. In fact, you won’t
find a McDonald’s here. (No Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken, or Subway
either!) Instead, Dahab offers:
- Beach camps where you can enjoy
the hospitality of the Bedouin people
- Independent cafés serving fresh
seafood near the sea and mint tea
- Backstreet and seafront
restaurants serving cuisine from Indian, Thai, Mexican, Italian, and
Korean to Vegan and veggie delights.
- Airbnbs,
Bedouin camps, and boutique guesthouses instead of large hotels.
(There are now a few
larger upmarket hotels such as Jaz Dahabeya, Swiss Inn, or Safir Dahab
for those not quite ready to give up their luxury)
- A walkable seafront where
everything feels local and personal
Originally
a Bedouin fishing village, Dahab has retained its bohemian, relaxed atmosphere,
attracting divers, backpackers, and digital nomads alike.

guide to Dahab and where to go here.
Compared to
the structured, resort, heavy feel of Sharm el,Sheikh, Dahab feels freer,
slower, and more authentic. You dive, eat, relax—and repeat.
Final Thoughts

on floor cushions by the water, Dahab offers a magic that keeps divers
returning year after year.
The Blue
Hole may put Dahab on the map—but it’s everything around it that keeps divers
