The Red Sea of Egypt is renowned for its vibrant coral reefs, dramatic drop-offs, and extraordinary marine life. Among the most awe-inspiring encounters a scuba diver can experience is swimming alongside a majestic manta ray. These graceful giants, with wingspans reaching up to seven metres, are among the ocean's most captivating creatures and a dream sighting for anyone interested in diving in the Red Sea.

Whether you're an experienced diver or planning to learn to dive in Sharm, understanding where and when to encounter manta rays can make your Red Sea adventure even more memorable.

Are There Manta Rays in the Red Sea?

Yes. Both reef manta rays and the closely related devil rays can occasionally be found throughout the Egyptian Red Sea. Although sightings are less predictable than in famous manta destinations such as the Maldives, encounters in Egypt are often more rewarding because of their rarity and the pristine environments in which they occur.

Manta rays are highly migratory and tend to appear where nutrient-rich waters attract large concentrations of plankton. In the Red Sea, sightings are often seasonal and can vary from year to year.

Why Are Manta Rays So Special?

Manta rays are among the largest fish species in the world, yet they feed exclusively on tiny plankton and small fish. Despite their enormous size, they are completely harmless to humans and are known for their apparent curiosity towards divers.

A manta encounter often becomes the highlight of a diver's logbook because of the animals' intelligence, graceful movements, and sheer presence underwater. Watching a manta glide effortlessly over a coral reef or circle a cleaning station is a magical experience.

Where Can You See Manta Rays While Scuba Diving in the Red Sea?

Several locations in Egypt's Red Sea have recorded manta ray sightings over the years. While encounters can never be guaranteed, these famous dive sites offer some of the best opportunities.

1. Ras Mohammed National Park

Located just south of Sharm El Sheikh, the spectacular reefs of Ras Mohammed are famous for pelagic encounters. During certain seasons, divers occasionally encounter majestic creatures such as manta rays cruising along the walls or feeding in open water.

Popular dive sites within Ras Mohammed include:

  • Shark Reef
  • Yolanda Reef
  • Jackfish Alley

These sites are accessible via daily boat trips from Sharm El Sheikh and provide some of the best opportunities for pelagic encounters while diving in Sharm el Sheikh.

2. The Strait of Tiran

The world-famous reefs of the Strait of Tiran attract large pelagics  due to strong currents and nutrient-rich waters. Manta rays occasionally appear around:

  • Jackson Reef
  • Woodhouse Reef
  • Thomas Reef

The combination of dramatic reef walls, schooling fish and occasional manta sightings makes Tiran one of the highlights of diving in the Red Sea.

3. Local Dive Sites

Some of our most recent Manta sightings have been at Ras Um Sid, one of our reefs that we consider a house reef. We believe two mantas are currently residing there as guests aboard our daily boats, and the Dive Runner has spotted at least two, if not three, mantas virtually every day.

For some guests who have been coming to Sharm for over 20 years, a shore dive at Ras Um Sid was recently their first experience with a Manta in the Red Sea – certainly starting their trip with a highlight!

When Is the Best Time to See Manta Rays in Egypt?

Although manta rays can theoretically appear at any time of year, sightings in the northern Red Sea around Sharm El Sheikh are generally more common during:

  • Late spring (April to June)
  • Autumn (September to November)

Water temperatures during these periods range from approximately 24°C to 29°C, creating ideal conditions for both divers and marine life.

Can Beginner Divers See Manta Rays?

Absolutely. One of the exciting aspects of learning to dive in Sharm is that extraordinary marine encounters can happen at virtually any certification level. Many manta sightings occur during recreational dives within standard depth limits.

Students completing courses with a professional dive centre in Sharm El Sheikh often discover that even their first open water dives can include unforgettable encounters with turtles, eagle rays, dolphins and, if luck is on their side, manta rays.

Tips for Diving with Manta Rays

If you are fortunate enough to encounter a manta ray while diving in the Red Sea, follow these responsible diving practices:

  • Maintain neutral buoyancy.
  • Never chase or touch the animal.
  • Keep a respectful distance.
  • Allow the manta to approach you if it chooses.
  • Avoid blocking its path or access to cleaning stations.
  • Keep camera flashes to a minimum.

Respectful interactions help ensure these magnificent animals remain comfortable around divers and preserve future encounters.
