Why Autumn Is A Favourite Diving Season In The Red Sea

Autumn has well and truly arrived - for many of our guests, the months of September - November are their favourite diving season of the year.

Better Temperatures

Gone are the scorching, mad-hot temperatures of July & August, as the heat of summer dissipates, Autumn brings cooler temperatures and the return of more varied marine life.

Don’t worry, though, it never gets too cold - the sea retains much of the warmth from the summer months with water temperatures between 26-28°C (79-82°F), comfortable for most divers.

Although it can be cooler, air temperatures rarely drop below 25°C during the day and 20°C at night. The intensity of the sun rays reflecting from the Red Sea surface makes it easier to shake off the shivers while still on the deck after a dive.

More Varied Marine Life

The slightly cooler Autumn temperatures usher in some of the best shark diving with threshers, hammerheads, and even silky sharks starting to make their appearances alongside the commonly spotted Oceanic White Tips and the ever-impressive Mantas.

Coral spawning often occurs during the Autumn, making for some mesmerizing natural underwater shows. With visibility improving after the summer plankton and the changing light conditions, it’s the perfect time for exploration and practicing your underwater photography, maybe even book the PADI Digital Underwater Photography Specialty.

Calmer Sea Conditions

The Red Sea is known to be much calmer in the Autumn months and often less crowded with fewer of the summer tourists about. If you are sensitive to rough waters, Autumn provides a more stable and enjoyable diving experience.

More Direct Flights, More Affordable Prices

Autumn sees the start of the extended autumn/winter airline flight schedules, including more direct flights to Sharm el Sheikh from the UK and Germany. Other direct European flights include France, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Greece, Italy, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.

Check out our guide to Winter flights for 2025/2026 here.

For Autumn/winter sun, the cost of getting to the Red Sea of Egypt is much more affordable than other winter sun and diving destinations such as the Maldives, Caribbean, or Southeast Asia. (And much quicker too with direct flights from Europe only taking between 5 - 7 hours from most destinations.)
